Lobbying on medical product safety issues
Skill area: Parliamentary monitoring and campaigning
Objective: Be seen to be setting the agenda
Leading surgical glove manufacturer Regent Medical saw a flood of low-grade, imported gloves threatening its business and exposing patients and healthcare workers to latex allergy problems. It was also known hospitals had to cut costs.
We developed a two tier campaign to lobby budget holders and key influencers, including the government, by approaching healthcare workers with a media relations campaign “We Don’t Compromise on Care”.
We helped set up The Latex Allergy Group, which attracted over 150 members within months and provided a non-commercial action group, lobbying government and raising issues in the media.
Questions were asked in the House of Commons as a result of direct parliamentary lobbying and pressure was put on the Medical Devices Agency.
