Life or death for reputation

Last’s night’s Horizon programme showed even the best brains can be overwhelmed in the heat of a crisis.

It said surgeons can learn from others who make life and death decisions under pressure, to cut surgery deaths.  Like the US pilot who avoided tragedy by landing his stricken plane on the Hudson River. This hero's secret?  A crisis checklist.

Today’s PR tip: prepare crisis checklists for your organisation.  Consider every possible threat and write checklist of operational and communications procedures for staff to follow.

We all like to think that in a crisis we would know what to do and say and when, but in crisis, stressed brains fail.

Build a detailed crisis manual with input from key workers who know how things work in the real world and build sensitive communication into it.  Do so and your reputation should remain intact.
