Five Minutes With…Jonathan Pollinger

We sat down with social media consultant Jonathan Pollinger to chat about the latest trends online and the best places to keep on top of the changing rules and newest platforms.

Hi Jonathan! Tell us a bit about who you’ve been working with?

This year I’ve done some work with University of Gloucestershire, Porge Research, National Star College, The Summerfield Nursing Unit, and of course Gravitas PR!

An interesting mix. So what does a ‘typical’ day look like for you?

I’m up at 6.30am and catch up on social media news before preparing social media updates for the day. Then it’s out for an in-house social media workshop in the morning before a Skype or face-to-face training and proposal/quote prep in the afternoon. Often I run a public workshop, talk or some business networking in the evening.

That sounds like it keeps you busy! What’s the best thing about your job?

It’s great to see people inspired after social media training or a talk and to see them go on to obtain real results and benefits for their business. I love connecting people – whether that’s a business with a new customer or introducing people via Twitter or at a network meeting. Every day is different and every client unique and I enjoy tailoring training or consultancy appropriately.

And the worst?

Accounts and tax return. I can’t stand keeping records and putting it all together. Have submitted to HMRC just in time though!

We’re sure you’re not the only person to say that! Where do you get the latest social media trends/insights?

Many sources. Primarily though, I like to do my own research so spend a lot of time using social networks. It’s exciting to discover a new feature before anyone else does and to come up with ideas on how to use it. It’s also worth re-visiting features to encourage their use with fresh ideas. Lately, I’m listening to numerous podcasts when at home or driving – SocialPros is good. I’m also in numerous LinkedIn Groups – Social Media London – is very useful and receive Christopher Penn’s email newsletter, correspond with Chris Brogan and regularly visit the Social Media Examiner website.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Never give up!

So if people wanted to get in touch, where can they find you online?

Googling ‘Jonathan Pollinger’ will yield a few results! Plus @intranetfuture on Twitter, LinkedIn uk.linkedin.com/jonathanpollinger, Facebook facebook.com/intranetfuture and of course my website intranetfuture.com
